Our VBS and Clinic in Catambe, Mozambique

On our Way to the Clinic at 4:30 a.m.

One huge highlight for our team was partnering with Angie, her staff, and the boys from the Hope House to do a VBS and Clinic in a village called Catambe. We got up very early (By ANYONE’s standard, I might add!!!): 4:00 a.m. We loaded up the truck and van and we were off. We drove 30 minutes to a ferry. Once off of the ferry we still had a one hour drive over some really rough terrain. (There is reason that most cars we’ve ridden in while in developing nations are TOYOTA’s) We probably only drove 5 miles, but, nevertheless, it was an entire hour (bouncing up and down, wacking our heads on the roof of the car every time we hit a pothole, which was about every 20 seconds)in those vehicles. (Since then Josh and Seth had to get their back adjusted…hmmm? I wonder if there is a correlation? Lol)…I think that I failed to mention that we took two vehicles: A Toyota Van (like our Previa) and small Toyota truck called a Hilux (it has a king cab and a short bed). We were going to take a shapa (bus) but it was too expensive. ….So, in these two vehicles we fit: all the VBS stuff, all the Clinic stuff, our lunches, and 28 people. I never thought about how crazy that sounded until right now!!! Can you even imagine? Closterphobia is NOT an option!!! All the Hope House boys road in the back of the truck. It was freezing! I felt horrible, but there was no other option. I never heard one word of complaint come out of anyone’s mouth. In fact they sang beautiful, African worship songs for the entire ride there and back home!!! BEAUTIFUL!! AMAZING!! INSPIRING!! We have it soooo easy in many ways.

We finally arrived around 7 a.m. We all quickly ,VERY QUICKLY!!!,

(Please See Picture for Visual Explanation; Please Think of a Disgusting Truck Stop Restroom to stimulate your memory of what this smelled like) used the squatty potty and began setting up for our VBS. From 8-10:30 we worshipped, told stories, played games, painted faces, and had a really good time with the kids.

As Soon as the VBS was over we began to set up for the Medical Clinic. Angie, Brenda and I assessed and treated patients. Seth, Michelle, Josh, and a few boys prayed over patients as they entered and left the clinic. We had a wound care treatment station manned by some of the Hope House boys. We saw around 80 patients. Each person received prayer, at least 12 reported some level of healing; each patient was assessed and treated.

Mary Beth assessing a patient; Brenda getting ready to see her next patient.

We all dropped into bed that night, exhausted. It was really fun being the hands and feet of Jesus…praying for the sick and meeting basic needs.
