Confusing Conversations Even in an English Speaking Country...

Tonight we went to this very cool church-sponsored fair highlighting different nations. One church put it on and invited the entire community. It was AWESOME. There were about 20 booths and each booth was focused on one nation. We bought tickets and traded them at the booths for food from the country that booth represented. The booth workers were dressed in costumes from that country and many of the booths had flags from their nation and information and prayer points for that nation. Wernich said that each cell group in this church was responsible for one booth and thus, one nation. In addition to these booths, there was a bounce house, face painting, games, music. It was such a neat idea and many people attended, even a priest from the local B'hai Temple.

(Pause the story for a quick interjection: Jonathan at the India table. God has really placed India on His heart over the past few months, so it was cool to "visit" India tonight with him.)

...Story now continues: Each ticket cost 5 rand (about $0.75). At some point during the night Joshua came to me to ask a question. It was loud; many people were talking; music was playing. ...So he asked me, "How much is 5 grand?" I explained that word grand meant thousand and so of course 5 grand was 5 thousand. Then he asked me, "How much is that in US dollars?" So, of course, I did the math and divided $5,000 by the exchange rate of 7.5 rand and came up with approximately $700. His eyes were VERY HUGE...and filled with shock. The next question came, "How can we afford these tickets?" Quickly, my mind caught up to his thinking process and I realized his initial question was NOT "How much is 5 GRAND?" , but rather, "How much is 5 RAND?" I had a great laugh!!!
